Below are typical outreach and educational activities in a single year for the staff of the Vatican Observatory. Such activities in other years may be found in Section III of the Annual Reports.


In 2002, the staff of the Vatican Observatory gave over 90 presentations to educational, religious, and civic groups. Approximately 5000 people heard these presentations. These included:

Guy Consolmagno was the guest of Science Guest of Honor at ConFusion, the annual science fiction convention at the University of Michigan where he participated in three panels on science fiction as well as three formal lectures. He spoke on this book "Brother Astronomer" to a number of groups including the children's religious class at the United Methodist Church in Fox Valley Illinois, the classes at Strake Jesuit High School in Houston, and the Caltech Management Association. He presented "God, Astronomy and the Search for Elegance" to chapter of Legatus in Ann Arbor Michigan, San Diego, Ventura, San Francisco, and Fresno.

George Coyne gave the inaugural address at the dedication of the Clavius Science Center at St. Ignatius High School Cleveland. He participated at a round table discussion "The Remote Future: A Journey from Science to Science Fiction" at the Science Center in Naples, Italy. He assisted in organizing the meeting on "The Special Character of Human Life" in Mar del Plata Argentina. He also gave presentations for friends of the Observatory in Chicago, Washington D.C., Peoria AZ., New York City and Tucson, AZ.

Chris Corbally spoke at the Thomas Merton Center in Palo Alto on "Enhancing Faith and Mindfulness through an Astronomers Filter". He continued to be an advisor to the Earth and Sky Radio series, and hosted several visits to the VATT.

Jose Funes conducted a 2 day workshop for teachers in Bolivia on "The Contemporary Image of the Universe", and gave presentations to students in Puerto Montt Chile and Osorno Chile.

Aileen O'Donoghue, visiting astronomer, gave public talks at Northwestern Oklahoma State University and conducted a retreat on "Loving the Universe" at the Manna House of Prayer in Concordia Kansas.

Bill Stoeger was named chairman of the St. Albert the Great Forum Board of the University of Arizona Catholic Newman Center. He gave three public lectures on Science and Theology at Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish in Kota Kinabula Malaysia. He presented a week long series of lectures on cosmology, science and teology to members of the University Congregational United Church of Christ and led a study group in creation literature.
